A fly on the wall<\/h2>\n

Tandiro has a thriving business with healthy employee morale. If you ask the staff<\/em>\u00a0why they enjoy working at the company, they answer, \u201cTandiro understands us, he<\/em>\u00a0listens to us\u201d. Tandiro enjoys walking around in the office. It\u2019s a weekly habit he<\/em>\u00a0acquired over the last few years. If you would ask him why he does this, his answer<\/em>\u00a0is \u201cI need to keep my ear on the ground\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

In today\u2019s ever changing business environment, we can be caught up\u00a0in our own little world. This can result in being perceived as not caring about\u00a0staff or customers. In the\u00a0book Design a Better Business, the authors, Patrick van der Pijl, Justin Lokitz and\u00a0Lisa Kay Solomon says, \u201cA good way to think about observation is to act like a fly\u00a0on the wall. When you start exploring and observing, leave your point of view\u00a0and assumptions at the door. Don\u2019t judge, just soak it in\u201d. Soaking in the\u00a0perspectives of others is key to finding nuggets of wisdom.<\/p>\n

Here are 2 tips to become a fly on the wall:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Design a habit of observation for yourself as a leader. This can be\u00a0spending time in the cafeteria. Walking around the departments once\u00a0a week.<\/li>\n
  2. Ask questions and listen to what is said and not said. Be intentional to\u00a0ask questions to your customers and team. Listen to the frustrations\u00a0and irritations of people.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Being a fly on the wall can be an exhilarating and informative habit.<\/p>\n
