Society as a Home<\/h2>\n

Samantha is 25 and keen to start her own business. She is however very nervous.\u00a0Her nerves have nothing to do with being in business. She does not want her<\/em>\u00a0business to just be another business. She wants her company to make a difference,\u00a0to change the community and to make the neighbourhood an enjoyable place to\u00a0live. She has seen to many businesses that are just in it for themselves. She does not\u00a0want that. She wants to have a company with a mission to serve and transform\u00a0society.<\/em><\/p>\n

Many of today\u2019s millennials think like this. They want to know that the company\u00a0they work for are making a positive contribution to society. No wonder,\u00a0according to research, we as Xpand and Egon Zehnder did, concluded that one of\u00a0the 5 competencies C-suite leaders need today, is the ability to anchor a course of\u00a0action into the social context. In his book, Lessons on Leadership,<\/em> Sir Jonathan\u00a0Sacks says the following:\u00a0The state represents what is done for us by the machinery of government, through\u00a0the instrumentality of laws, courts, taxation and public spending. Society is what\u00a0we do for one another through communities, voluntary associations, charities and\u00a0welfare organizations.<\/p>\n

In the book, The Home We Build Together<\/em>, Sir Jonathan Sacks give a few hints on\u00a0how to empower others, and what can stop them from feeling empowered.<\/p>\n

First of all, everyone in the community should feel it is a home. They should not\u00a0feel like guests at a hotel. A place where no one interacts and everyone is just in\u00a0their own room. People should also not feel like guests at the country house\u00a0someone else owns. Leaders create homes where others feel safe and at home.<\/p>\n

Secondly, communities should not live with a victim mentality. Victimhood\u00a0breads entitlement that leads to eradication. Victims know more about rights\u00a0than responsibility. This strips them of being empowered and taking self-responsibility.<\/p>\n<\/div>

<\/span><\/div>

As South African citizens, we are privileged to stay in a country that focuses on\u00a0the social context.<\/p>\n

Here are a few tips to chart your course as a leader into the social context:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Link your purpose to a need in the community. If you have an IT\u00a0company, get involved in the community to uplift peoples digital\u00a0competencies. It is much easier to do something for the community\u00a0with the skill you have than to try and doing something you don\u2019t like.<\/li>\n
  2. Get to know your neighbourhood. In the time we live, people are\u00a0becoming more and more isolated.<\/li>\n
  3. Support local community initiatives.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    It is a beautiful sight to see a country develop into being a home where everyone\u00a0is welcome and all make a healthy contribution. This does not happen overnight.\u00a0It takes time and intentionality.<\/p>\n
